CALLIGRAHY AND WORKSHOP FAQ
What classes do you offer?
We currently offer pointed pen (also known as dip pen) calligraphy classes for modern calligraphy and Copperplate.
Hold it right there. What do you mean by pointed pen or dip pen calligraphy?
We feel you! There’s sooooo many terms out there pertaining to calligraphy and it does get confusing. Pointed pen or dip pen calligraphy is the same thing, which is calligraphy written using a steel nib attached to a pen holder. The nib is dipped into ink before writing.
What about brush calligraphy / brush lettering?
As the name suggests, brush calligraphy is simply calligraphy which is done using a brush. Brush calligraphy can be written using brush pens or with the humble paintbrush.
Is hand lettering the same thing?
Not quite. Hand lettering is essentially, the art of drawing letters. Each letter is carefully thought out and hand drawn. Composition and letters go hand in hand. In calligraphy, basic strokes are used to build letters and then words. This isn’t quite the same for hand lettering. A great example of hand lettering is Stefan Kunz’s work. His. Work. Is. Amazing.
I have never picked up a pointed pen before. Can I attend your classes?
Yes, you can! We offer beginner classes for those with little to no experience in calligraphy.
All materials are provided and you only need to bring yourself and an appetite for learning!
I’ve taken a class before. Do you offer intermediate classes?
Intermediate classes are definitely in the works! Please stay tuned for updates on classes on our social media.
I have really bad handwriting. Can I still attend your classes and will it help to improve my handwriting?
Calligraphy employs completely different techniques compared to handwriting and you absolutely can attend classes. Unfortunately, it will not help much to improve your current handwriting due to the difference in techniques.
Cool beans. Um, what’s the difference between modern calligraphy and Copperplate?
Modern calligraphy is a term for calligraphy that does not fall into the category of traditional scripts. It’s basically a flowy/loose/freeform sort of style. Modern calligraphy comes in so many forms, depending on the calligrapher’s style. Because of this, it may be a little difficult to read compared to traditional scripts.
Copperplate is a traditional script which dates back centuries and originates from English Round Hand. It is a broad term as variations of Copperplate scripts exist. However, a characteristic feature of Copperplate is that it’s written on a forward slant angle of 55 degrees. It is a shaded script where you will see thick downstrokes and upstrokes which are fine hairlines. Consistency in slant angle, spacing and shade thickness is extremely important. Copperplate is also very easy to read.
For a side-by-side comparison with photos of both scripts, do check out this page.
Do you offer private or one-to-one classes? What are the topics available?
Yes, we do. We understand that some may require more guidance which may not be possible in a group setting and the workshop content can be tailored to the student’s needs.
Our one-to-one classes are RM380/pax. As for small classes for bachelorette parties and so on, the charges are RM250/pax.
